Wool fabric is one of the most versatile and durable materials for constructing coats and tents.

It has been used for centuries by outdoor enthusiasts and military personnel due to its inherent insulating properties and resistance to water and wind.

Loden fabric was designed by the Steiner brothers, who came from the Salzburg Alps. It was supposed to be a warm and comfortable fabric, ideal for trips to the high mountains. It was very quickly adopted among mountaineers, but also among the inhabitants of the surrounding mountains. Hence, we can most often meet loden in folk clothes.

Water-resistant wool fabric

The natural fibers of wool create small pockets of air that trap body heat, making it an ideal material for cold weather clothing.

Wool coats are particularly popular for their warmth and durability, as they can withstand years of wear and tear without losing their shape or insulation.

In addition to its insulating properties, wool is also have water-resistant. The thicker the woolen fabric, especially when rolled up, the slower it lets water in.

What's more, we also sell loden from our collection in a version impregnated with the C6 preparation, free from PFOA, PFOC, PFOS compounds. It is therefore completely safe for people, animals and the environment, and at the same time it is completely waterproof - even the biggest downpour will not leak into the tent! Check our wool for tents!

Another advantage of wool fabric is its ability to regulate temperature. In warm weather, wool wicks away moisture and sweat from the body, keeping you cool and dry. In cold weather, the insulating properties of wool keep you warm and comfortable. A woolen tent also has an important property. During the night, it wicks moisture away from the inside, thanks to which we will avoid unpleasant dew in the morning.

Wool heavy loden - ideal for tent or coat

The weave of the fabric is also important. Loden, according to tradition, is made of wool in a plain weave. Then the fabric is subjected to fulling, i.e. felting. This fabric is compacted, making the weave invisible, and the material itself gains volume. From one running meter of fabric, only 0.3 running meter of loden is obtained!

Finally, it is important to consider the quality of the wool itself. High-quality wool fabrics are made from long, fine fibers that are spun tightly together, creating a strong and durable fabric. Lower quality wool fabrics may be made from shorter, coarser fibers that are less durable and prone to pilling.

On the other hand, loden is made of a combination of both types of fibers, which makes it easier to roll the fabric.

This gives the fabric a significant amount of volume in the process. At the same time, the finished material drapes nicely, does not crease and is sufficiently stiff, unfortunately, the short pile makes it quite unpleasant to the touch and biting. However, this is not a disadvantage, because its main use is coats, uniform coats or tents. The loden itself does not come into direct contact with the skin.
