What are the characteristics of Chinese taffeta?
Chinese taffeta is a silk fabric with a characteristic slightly raw texture, resulting from its plain weave and a subtly muted sheen. It is a natural silk that combines elegance with a more practical, “workable” character.
Like Indian taffeta, it belongs to high-quality fabrics, although it may feature slight irregularities caused by the natural thickening of the yarn. These subtle variations are typical of silk and highlight its authenticity.
What distinguishes Chinese taffeta is the similar number of warp and weft threads, which makes it softer and less stiff than Indian taffeta. It drapes well while still maintaining its shape, which is why it is often chosen as a silk dress fabric, including for wedding and evening gowns.
Silk taffeta for historical garment
It is also a very popular silk taffeta for historical garment making and is widely used in historical reconstruction, especially for designs inspired by the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Its structure allows it to reproduce silhouettes that require slight body and support, without the effect of a heavy or overly rigid fabric.
